Birbal began to think, ‘Who is the real king?’ The very next moment, he got the answer. Confidently, he approached the King and bowed to him. “But how did you identify me” The king asked, puzzled. Birbal smiled and explained; “The false kings were all looking at you, while yourself looked straight ahead. Even in regal robes, the common people will always look to their king for support.” Overjoyed, the king embraced Birbal and showered him with gifts.

(c) Bees-live in a house that is called a hive. There are three kinds of bees; workers, drones and queens. Only one queen bee can live in each hive. Each bee takes its proper place and does its own work. Some go out and gather honey from the flowers; others stay at home and work inside the hive. The cells which they build are all of one shape and size, and no space is left between them. The cells are not round. They have six sides. It is not safe for children to handle bees. Bees have a painful sting that they use in their defence.

Discipline can be considered as the potential of students to do a thing or finish their task in a fixed time. The meaning of discipline is to keeping control so that students can attain their objectives.
Discipline in students life attract all the right things, and because of this, students gain success in each field of their life. In a student’s life, the discipline is always catered as a guide to focus on their goals. The disciplined life is classified by success, efficiency, and better time management.

Our school celebrated its founding day by organizing a grand annual function in the school auditorium on December 30. All students, their parents, teachers and staff and other respected invitees attended the function. The programme started upon the arrival of the chief guest, the District Magistrate of Bhiwani at 11 a.m. The proceedings began with welcoming speech delivered by the principal. This was followed by a short speech by the chairman of the school’s managing committee in which he spoke of the school’s eventful journey and achievements in the last two decades since its establishment in 1995. Then followed a number of dance, song and cultural performances which were beautifully persented and entertained the audience. The chief guest delivered his inspiring speech which urged the students to do their best and bring honour to the school, their family and the country. Finally, the school band played the national anthem and the function ended at 1:30 am. Sweets and refreshment were served to all those present and the day ended on a happy note.

(a) Tell in brief about all the characters in the story ‘Packing’. (Don’t forget about the dog!).
Ans – George and Harris are the narrator’s friends with whom he is about to go on trip. They turn out to be worse packers than the narrator. They are highly disorganized, clumsy and foolish when it comes to packing. They place heavier things on top of light ones thus squashing them and making a mess. They spread salt over everything. They step on butter and sit on it. Instead of helping the narrator while he packs, they simply sit and enjoy his forgetfulness.
Another important character in the story is Montmorency, the dog. The narrator says that Montmorency’s only ambition in life is to get in everyone’s way and be sworn at. The dog made the most use of his day by wriggling his way in places where he was not wanted. He would create nuisance and make people so mad that they started throwing things at him. Just while they were about to pack the hampers, Montmorency came and sat down on things. He also believed that whenever Harris or George reached out their hand for anything, it was his cold damp nose that they wanted. Montmorency, then, put his foot in jam, pretended that lemons were rats and killed three before Harris hit him with a frying pan to get him out of the hamper.

(b) What are the main features of the teachers and the schoolrooms that Margie and Tommy have in the story ‘The Fun They Had’ ?
Ans – Margie and Tommy were taught by mechanical teachers instead of human teachers. The children in the story were taught by mechanical teachers. The mechanical teachers were actually computer systems which had large black screens on which all the lessons were shown and questions were asked. They had a slot in which students had to put their homework and test papers. The students were taught to answer their questuions in a punch code and the mechanical teacher calculated the marks immediately. They had their personalized schools in their homes itself. They did not have any classmates. They learned geography, history and arithmetic. They had regular days and hours for school.

Ans – The shehnai was played traditionally in the temple at the royal courts and on the occasion of weddings. The credit must go to Bismillah Khan to take this instrument onto the classical stage.

Ans – Kezia’s grandmother encouraged her to get to know her father better by sending her to the drawing room to talk to her parents on Sundays. She also suggested Kezia to make a pin cushion out of a beautiful piece of yellow silk as a gift for her father’s birthday.

Ans – Einstein called his desk drawer at the patent office the ‘Bureau of theoretical physics’ as he was developing his own ideas in secret by storing them in his desk drawer and thus, it had all the evidence which could reveal the secret.

Ans – Montmorency put his leg into the jam and disturbed the teaspoons. He pretended that the lemons were rats and went into the hamper to kill three of them before being hit with a frying pan by Harris. The packing escapade was already a messy job and Montmorency’s contribution made it even more tiresome.

Ans – ‘The Road Not Taken’ describes the situation of a person in his life where he finds it difficult to make decisions between what is right and what is wrong. It deals with the complexities of life and how its ways never fall into the right place initially.
The main theme of the poem is making the right decisions at the right time. It offers a profound perception of decision making. The traveller comes across a path that was diverging into two and he was in a dilemma regarding which path to choose. This hides a deep meaning behind it. It suggests that sometimes in life, we have to make decisions without the full knowledge and understanding of the state of affairs. But it is also necessary to consider all the available options and make an appropriate choice.
The choice at the crucial moment determines and changes the path of our lives. Hence, the poem focuses on a deep analysis of the situation before we arrive at a decision.

(b) What circumstances led to the turning of miser old lady into a woodpecker? (A Legend of the Northland)
Ans – A woman of Northland, who was miserly and selfish was changed to a woodpecker by Saint Peter. She had refused to give even a cake as thin as a wafer to the tired and hungry saint. So, as a punishment, she was turned to a bird who would have to live in a nest and bore into wood for her food.

Ans – When it rains, the poet enjoys lying in his rustic chamber bed with his head tucked against the pillow and listening to the quiet rain patter.

Ans – The snake was lying on the sand before anyone saw it and chased it away. The snake disappeared in the ripples of the water among the green reeds.

Ans – We should make sure that we are mentally and physically healthy. When we stay strong, the wind won’t harm us and will become friends with us. The poet even conveys that we must stay strong so that we can withstand difficult situations and overcome the challenges in life.

(a) Write another ending of the story ‘iswaran the Storyteller’.
Ans – The story in the book showed that Mahendra was afraid of dark cloudy thing.
The other ending of the story should show that Mahendra was brave and courageous man. He should have followed the cloudy thing. It would have proved that whether the ghosts or spirits is a real or imaginary thing. So, Mahendra could have slept without any fear of unknown. Mahendra could be there to prove the ghost theory wrong without resigning from the job. He could act as a courageous man. He could catch Iswaran red-handed, and they went away together, respecting their strong bonding.

(b) Do you think that Prashant is a good leader? Justify.
Ans – Yes, I think Prashant is a good leader because when he noticed that the situation wasn’t improving he made it his responsibility to take care of everyone. Yes, young people can get together to help people during natural calamities as they are more energetic than the older generation. They are capable of doing much more than the adults. They will also have better ideas on how to face the circumstances and overcome it. Young people also tend to be visionaries and they are the future of any nation.

(a) What are the things that child sees on his way to fair ? (The Lost Child)
Ans – The child sees toys, flowering mustard field, dragonflies, butterflies, doves, a huge crowd of people entering the fair, sweet shops, garlands of gulmohar, rainbow-colored balloons, a snake charmer playing a flute and a roundabout swing.

(b) In what sense was Toto pretty? (The Adventures of Toto)
Ans – Toto was pretty as he had bright eyes that sparkled with mischief beneath his deep-set eyebrows. His teeth were pearly white which were often displayed in a smile. His tail also added to his good looks.

(c) Why was the Happy Prince sad? (The Happy Prince)
Ans – The Prince was sad because he could see the unhappiness of his city. Even his heart, which was made of cheap metal, could feel the people’s pain. When the Happy Prince was alive, he did not know what tears were. He lived in a palace where there was no sadness.

(d) What is Johnsy’s illness? What is its treatment? (The Last Leaf)
Ans – Johnsy is suffering from Pneumonia. Her willingness to live can cure her. Her doctor says that it seems as if she has made up her mind that she is not going to get well. He says that medicines won’t work if she does not want to live.

(e) ‘My cat was back and so was I’. Had the author gone anywhere? Why or why not? (A House is not a Home)
Ans – The author says these words because he felt that a part of him had gone missing with the cat too. He does not physically go anywhere but mentally he felt a little lost without the cat. Even though he had settled down in life and made friends, he still missed his cat. Now that she was healthy and back with him, he feels as though his life is back also.

(f) Give a brief character-sketch of Olga. (The Beggar)
Ans – Anushka Gairola Olga had a very gentle and calm personality. She was responsible towards her duty and served the advocate in a caring manner. The gentle nature of Olga could be seen through her emotions for the beggar boy. She had pity as well as concern for the beggar boy. Her concern can be seen in the story as she herself chopped the woods for the beggar boy with the intention that the boy would be able to get some money in exchange of the woods.
